BIO Groundwork & OTHER INFO

*NOTE: Frederick was NOT the male parent of the Philip Huff who was born in about 1747, and with whom this Frederick would have been roughly a gimmicky. Frederick may take had a son named Philip, but born decades later than the Philip who has quite often been erroneously declared on individual'due south family copse. There seems to be no stopping people from accepting those little green leaves in Ancestry!

Note to Interested Descendants, etc.: info on this family grouping has been started in WikiTree, mostly with data from a book, "Related families of Botetourt County, Virginia," which doesn't really include sources and may lean pretty heavily on family tradition. At present hoping someone else volition take upwards the charge! and fill in descendant info, primary source references, and do you know (or keep an eye out for) a straight line male Huff descendant who has or could be yDNA tested!!! to identify to which of the MANY lines of unlike Huff families this i relates!

Biography

Much of the information represented in the Huff section of the book "Related families of Botetourt County, Virginia" about Frederick Huff and his descendants has non been verified in master source records. Some or much of the data, particularly equally regards the "oldest" family members, may include or exist largely based on "family legend."

In "Related families of Botetourt County, Virginia," it was said that Frederick immigrated to Northward America from Switzerland at the urging of a brother who had settled in New England:

Phillip settled in New England and contacted his brother Frederick, who had served in the military machine for two years, encouraging him to come to America. Frederick came to Maryland by mode of Bucks Canton, Pennsylvania and married Violet Buckett (or Puckett). In 1810 Frederick was living in Maryland.[1]

No more specific identify or locale in Switzerland was indicated. No immigration yr was indicated--other than it was prior to the Revolutionary War, since he was said to accept served on the Pennsylvania Line in that war. No birth year or age was indicated. Nevertheless, from the details that he was said to accept served in the in the High german-Swiss army and in the Revolutionary War, we may brainstorm making some possible estimates.

Frederick was also said to take served in the German-Swiss army, which evidently had been mandatory. A rough estimate of 1743 as a year of birth for Frederick is based on assuming an age of most 18 when he performed military service for the German-Swiss regular army. An estimate for that military machine service would be roughly 1761-1763. "Related Families..." indicated that his military service was mandatory. All the same, Switzerland plain did not have mandatory military service during that time period. If the story is accurate, Frederick probable was non a citizen of Switzerland per se and may have been from a German principality at the time he was conscripted.

Some time following his military service--perchance almost 1764--it would appear that Frederick traveled to North America. He was said to have fabricated his manner to Bucks Canton, Pennsylvania earlier going to Frederick County, Maryland. It was said that he met and married his spouse Violet, the marriage plainly occurring by well-nigh 1766. Violet's family name was said to perchance have been Buckett or Puckett. In other words, her family surname remains unknown. Notwithstanding, family unit searchers could keep their eyes open for those or similar surnames, possibly too including names such as Buchele, Buechel, Birchett, etc.

A note regarding "Frederick" and "Huff" as his name...which are uncertain insofar as his name at nascency may accept been something else. Thus far, a name at birth or tape of birth have not been identified. Said to have come to America from Switzerland, a more than germanic version of the given name could plausibly have been Friedrich, or Johann Friedrich, or another proper noun altogether. In a like vein, his birth surname was likely to have been something other than "Huff"--which is a surname that often appears to accept been derived from some other surname. For example, a name may have been simplified or shortened, or have been more or less phonetically spelled as pronounced, or have been americanized from some other, oft-times (but not invariably) similar name. For just i example of many, information technology would exist quite possible for Frederick's surname to have derived from "Imhooff" (or one of its many variant spellings)--a Swiss name.

The Preface to the section near "The Huff Family" of Botetourt County in "Related families of Botetourt Canton, Virginia" (2000) does a disservice by vaguely suggesting that "a comprehensive report of the Huffs in Virginia" would involve two other specified lines of Huffs. Whoever wrote that clearly had no idea how common the Huff surname had been in early Virginia! Nor that the two families they happened to know near--out of numerous families of this surname--were non necessarily even likely to accept been related to Frederick's family.

In that location were NUMEROUS Huff, Hoff, and Hough family unit groups, plus spelling variations, in early on Virginia. Conceptually, nosotros might also think of this surname as though it were "Smith"--and not assume family relationships amidst different family groups. That there may be another family of the surname fairly nearby, even in the same or adjacent counties, cannot exist considered an indication that they were related in whatever way.

The two other family groups mentioned in "Related families of Botetourt County, Virginia" seem specially unlikely to have been related to this item Botetourt County family group. But equally they say, in genealogy anything is possible. Now we can also add, Evidence ME THE yDNA! Sooooo...if there are any living direct line male person Huff descendants of Frederick, with all-male descent, practise delight consider taking a yDNA test and loading haplogroup result information hither.

Following is a file prepared by or for the tardily Max Huff in 1993 for the Huff/Hough/Hoff Newsletter that he published. He often had submissions from family members and this slice does read quite a chip like "Related families of Botetourt County, Virginia."

  1. Phillip ?
  2. Benjamin ?

If the person listed below in Augusta Co is not this Frederick, it is possible that he was an older son. The tradition among descendants is that Frederick of this lineage notwithstanding lived in 1810 in MD, merely this may be wrong.
